Facebook Started Losing Users in US & Canada; Is Facebook dying? A Case Study
Facebook, the company that presented the World one of the best Social Networking site that you could ever find on Internet and the youngest Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg. Going to the History of Facebook, we all know that it really created a burst in United States and Canada where the site initially took off. Ever since, the Facebook started hearing lot of complaints about the privacy, security of data on cloud, fake profiles, child pornography ( that recently settled by introducing Microsoft’s Photo DNA Technique) and lot more. It’s like, “there will be always problems behind every successful man and it’s simply ‘cos of jealously”. But, the things are really turning around by making that quotes not true. Now, it’s the reports from Canada and United States saying, Facebook started losing the domination in these places and the worse things is, day by day the rates are really getting accelerated. So, my question is; Is really Facebook dying? Let’s have a look on that now. Read ahead;
There is nothing much to worry though, ‘cos Facebook is really getting great response all over the world. Hundred’s of new Facebook Profile is getting created every 5 seconds. It recently hit the 700 million users goal from 500 million. Now, that is a great news ah! But, the Facebook is really losing it’s stands on it’s mother country United States. Look at this figures; Facebook lost about 6 million users only from United States making the total users from 155.2 million to 149.4 million, The loss from Canada is apparently low as 1.49 million, and like small loss of about 100k is reported from UK and Norway. This all indicated the loss for the month of May 2011 alone. Facebook is showing great response in the African countries where, the people are still stuck with the old school Orkut from Google.
See this map, which gives you a good look on the world Social Networking growth. Thanks to Vincos Blog for this great research results. This map’s are created by analysing the Alexa ranking and Google Trends from June 2009 to June 2011.
From the Map you can see the services like Maktoob and Hi5 are almost got stopped and are replaced by Facebook. But, why Facebook interest is getting lowered each day in one side when it is increasing in the other side of the world? Let’s have a look;
Why Facebook Falling in United States & Truth About the Total Number of Users
1. Increase in Spams
Spams are really around the web and it will be more where more people go on internet. Of course with 700 million users Facebook is really a good place we can find spams. The spams are created according to current trends. When Justin Bieber climbed the Everest of celebrity with his Baby, the spam was wearing a Justine Bieber mask. Then, when the Bin Laden got killed by United States, the spam said he could show you the Assassination video if you click him. The latest was the YouTube Video spam and i think that was one of the best one. Facebook is taking real time action and these are cleared within 24hr of infection. But, what about the people who clicked it and got spammed. This shows Facebook is really vulnerable for some kind of simple JavaScript.
2. Advertising Hype
I think one of the thing that Facebook is powered with is the power of Advertisers. The dating ads, the body building apps, “Like this” fan page ad and more, that you can see on the side bar and it is really annoying. Browser extensions are available to hide this bar if you want.
3. Privacy matters
I have come across with lot of user profiles (they are not my friends) where the private pictures, wall posts and videos are accessible to the outside person who don’t need to be in the friend list. This is mostly due to the unawareness about how their profile will look like for an outsider. Why does Facebook initiate automatically all these privacy setting when a new account is created and why can’t they let the user choose whether he has to show the private things to a third party. Instead, what Facebook do is, they put all this accessible to outsiders and let the user choose whether he has to enable or disable the third party access. What is the use of disabling the access after someone bad is accessed already. Is this what Mark Zuckerberg said about Privacy settings? It’s really pathetic!!
4. Fake/Spam Accounts
This things is really a serious issue. People create Fake accounts of person’s by collecting the pictures of the user from their profile. They use this to make other’s convince that these profiles are real and they are the real person’s and to make them added to the friends list for rogue things. Twiends, is a service that make you get more likes for your fan page for each like that you give for other pages. In this service people use fake profiles to get more ‘seeds’ by liking the other pages and use that seed to build fan base for their Facebook page. People use fake profiles to get access to lot of services. But, what they are actually doing is, stealing some others photo and make it the cover page of the fake profile.
There are lot more to say about Facebook. Clearly, i am not a Facebook hating person. Facebook is really entertaining for me and i am addicted to it. I just wanted to say these things and said, that’s all, i believe you also agree with the points i just said. Do share your feed back as comments. Thank you for reading.
