We all know we are supposed to take care of our teeth, but since it can be so inconvenient to take the necessary steps for oral hygiene it’s easy to let it slide. So how can taking care of your teeth make you money? Well it really makes you money by saving you money. Did you realize that getting a crown put in your tooth can cost you as much as $1,200? And that is for a single crown.
But your need for a crown is perfectly avoidable. You need a crown when your tooth has had such serious decay that a filling simply will not fix the problem. In fact, if your tooth has had too much decay you should not just get a filling because that would make your tooth weak and susceptible to breaking. But while a crown will ensure that the rest of your tooth that remains intact, it can be hard to keep your wallet intact when you hear the cost of your dental procedures.
We all know that flossing is a pain. No one wants to slide that thin little string in between each tooth on a daily basis. It often causes bleeding in the gums, the floss will break or fray, and it can be hard to reach every part of the mouth. But by not flossing you are almost ensuring that you will face expensive dental bills down the road. Pieces of food and bacteria can easily get wedged in between your teeth and this is where the decay will begin.
So flossing on a regular basis can save you a lot of money in the long term. And not having to spend over $1,000 on a crown or root canal will feel like you are making money. This may seem like an overly optimistic view of dental health, but when you have seen people spend over $5,000 on a single dentist visit, you will begin to understand.
There is also something you need to understand about dental insurance. Almost every dental insurance plan has a yearly spending limit, and when you go over that limit you will have to pay for everything else out of pocket. This limit is often around $1,000 but can be more if you have a better plan.
But in a rough economy with a lot of people out of work there are many who simply do not have dental insurance and have to pay for every visit out of their wallets. By brushing your teeth 3 times a day and flossing at least once a day you can help protect yourself from these ridiculous hikes in dental costs. Rinsing with a mouth wash is also a good idea, and not just because it will give you better breath. It can help kill cavity causing bacteria as well.
