Times Square

Times Square embodies New York; it’s brash and sometimes bizarre, always entertaining and universally recognisable. Its infamous scrolling NASDAQ board and naked cowboy contrast its extremes of seriousness and fun – both are within yards of each other.

If you want to feel like a real New Yorker, be here on the 31st of December and join about 1million others for the New Years Eve ball drop from One Times Square. Unlike the first ball in 1908 which was Waterford Crystal, the ball is now made from energy efficient LED lights.

Broadway

Broadway-New-York

Of course while so close, Broadway is a must see, being possibly the most famous street in theatre and one of the first electrically lit areas in the States. The street runs the length of Manhattan Island and parallel to the Hudson River, through notable places like Union Square, Madison Square – its westerly tip finishes in Greenwich Village.

The Avenue houses an ever changing array of celebrated entertainment. It’s also place of the Canyon of Heroes, where ticker- tape parades celebrated the end of World War 2 and the Apollo landings.

This area is a celebration of America unlike any other; a hub of excitement and brazenness but distinct from America’s other fluorescent light sights as it’s a citadel of culture and truly encompasses the cities spirit.

Guggenheim Museum

The museum is permanent home to a number of famous artists from the 20th century but is worth visiting for it architecture alone. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the museum is an amazing structure with its spiralling shape. Supposedly it took Wright 700 sketches before he got the design for the museum we see today.

Its interior holds a number of priceless gems created Kandinsky, Chagall, Mondrian, Pablo Picasso and a host of others. The museum which opened in 1959 and is situated overlooking Central Park.

The park is another must see when visiting New York; ideal for a ride in horse and carriage by night or just to relax in by day. The park also holds concerts, performances by the Central Park Brass and the New York Classic Theatre as well as having a selection of cafes and restaurants for you to rest and relax in.

A very special place in New York, it is worth seeing as it’s one of the most defining historical moments in our lifetime. The area is interesting and has numerous memorials on its grounds to that hallowed day the moment. Walking tours are a great way to see the site as they are often a source of interesting information and are usually introduced by local New Yorkers.
