The Windows 8 Operation system takes its design cues largely from Microsoft’s mobile operating system, known as Windows Phone 7. The next version of Windows will feature a significant shift away from the traditional desktop and toward the importance of “tiles.” These tiles display user information and help summarize the activities, needs, and alerts of a Windows users’ installed applications.
This concept sounds exciting in theory, especially after the highly positive reviews received by the company’s mobile operating system overhaul. But no one has really seen Windows 8 up and close and personal yet. Sure, the company has had a few previews at its Redmond campus and at select tech events across the country, but the public has yet to get the grand tour of this tile-based revolution in Windows computing.
That is all about to change as the company plans to take the stage at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Microsoft’s charismatic and sometimes controversial CEO, Steve Ballmer, will take the stage at the technology conference at 6:30 p.m. on January 9th, 2012. His keynote speech will be a celebratory Windows 8 affair, and he’ll be showing off the operating system’s bold new direction.
It all makes sense, of course. When Microsoft was beginning to build up the hype around the then-in-development Windows 7 release, it scheduled a keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show to preview a beta of the operating system. There, Steve Ballmer apologized for the mess that was Windows Vista and guided attendees (and those watching at home) through the new and improved set of features that Windows 7 was about to usher in. Several months later, that beta became a final release and Windows 7 was given a glowing reception by technology pundits and users alike.
It is estimated that this keynote at CES 2012 will foreshadow a release date for Windows 8 sometime the following April. And that makes sense, given Microsoft’s previous release timelines for its operating systems and the length of time it devotes the beta and release candidate phases of its development cycle.
If users are lucky, Microsoft might even unveil a public beta program as it has lately been doing with all of its major software releases. This would be the true “coming out party” for Windows 8, as real Windows enthusiasts would be able to use, test, and report on the upcoming operating system’s bold new look.
However, only time will tell if Microsoft plans to go beyond its glowing keynote and provide its users with a hands-on experience that fully shows off the Windows 8 experience. Until more is known, simply enjoy the fact that Windows 8 is coming — and on January 9th, everyone will get to see just what surprises it hides beneath each one of those “tiles.”
